Santa Statues in Santa Claus, Indiana

If you've ever traveled to Santa Claus, Indiana, you know that we celebrate the holiday season 365 days a year. But have you ever noticed all of the varied Santa Claus statues scattered throughout the town?

Outside in Kringle Place, I saw a family taking photos of their family members next to, and on top of, the oversized Santa statue outside of the Santa Claus Museum and Spencer County Visitors Bureau and it got me thinking... exactly how many Santas are in the town of Santa Claus?!

There are a few statues that visitors can stand next to... some that are out of reach... a few that look down from above... and even others that are spread throughout the town. Do you know how many? Do you want to guess?!

Now, this doesn't count all of the many Santa statues inside of the Santa Claus Christmas Store but there may be some nearby...

There is a $20 gift certificate to the Santa Claus Christmas Store for the person who guesses the number of Santa statues in Santa Claus, Indiana (or get the closest) by Monday, July 26 at 10:00 am CDT. The statues must be at least 2-foot tall and found outdoors within the town limits. All answers can be posted to the Santa Claus, Indiana Facebook fan page on the post with this topic. Each person may only guess once and if there are several correct answers, a winner will be selected at random. In order to play along and count the Santa statues, participants cannot be a local resident and must be at least 13 years of age.

Gary Brackett visits Holiday World

Even though the sky is cloudy today, Gary Brackett is brightening the day of children from 15 special families at Holiday World & Splashin' Safari. Indianapolis Colts Defensive Captain, Gary Brackett, brought several families from all over the state to the Park in Santa Claus, Indiana, as part of "Gary Brackett's IMPACT Foundation."

I lined up with the rest of the crowd to meet Brackett and got a personalized autographed picture – I always love meeting new people :) ! I was able to capture a short video of Brackett at Holiday World to share with everyone. While I sat down for just a short few minutes, I made sure that Brackett was going to enjoy the Park for the rest of the day (after all of the interviews, of course) - and he's looking forward to it!

LINCOLN - Indiana's American Story

I had the opportunity to see opening night at Lincoln Amhpitheatre... and it was spectacular! LINCOLN: Upon the Altar of Freedom, debuted its second season last night with new enhancements from the premiere season in 2009.

The night air was hot and humid but the enthusiasm that spread among the cast, crew, and audience made up for the summer stickiness! One of my favorite parts of the evening was before the show even began... the characters mingled with the crowd, demonstrating skills and childen's games from the Lincoln era.

John Wilkes Booth and a soldier began an argument before we took our seats and an ensemble of characters entertained us with a cappella songs that Lincoln would have listened to many years ago.

LINCOLN, the play by Ken Jones, brings the audience into the mind of Lincoln and throughout his time in Indiana. It was during Lincoln’s 14 years in this area that he developed a thirst for knowledge and reading. In addition, Lincoln lost two important women during this time: his mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln, and his sister, Sara Lincoln. The formative years Lincoln spent in Indiana helped developed the character of our beloved 16th president.

Remembering tourism leader Will Koch

The town of Santa Claus and surrounding community have lost a wonderful man. The death of Will Koch was announced earlier this week to the shock of all who knew him.

Will Koch was many great things to so many people. In addition to leading Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari into a rising success for the past 20 years, Will was an advocate for the whole community. A true believer in the area and what it has to offer travelers, Will always supported the Lincoln history and magical spirit of Christmas.

As president of the Lincoln Boyhood Drama Association, Will played an integral role to bring the Lincoln Amphitheatre to life in 2009. Will was a Lincoln enthusiast and very involved in educating the public on Lincoln’s history in Spencer County. The 2010 season of LINCOLN will be dedicated to the legacy of Will Koch.

During the infancy of the Spencer County Tourism Commission, Will Koch donated office space for the Visitors Bureau from 1998 – 2007 in order to help the local tourism industry grow. Furthermore, Will was instrumental in the Highway 231 coalition. He helped the process of getting the road rebuilt in Spencer County and into Dubois County. Will was also an activist in linking our area to the new I-69 near Crane.

Earlier this year, Will participated in the strategic visioning sessions for tourism in Spencer County. Will was more than just a supporter of the tourism industry, his vision helped create the destination we have to offer families today.

Family Fun extends from Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari into the community and county-wide attractions because of the initiative from Will Koch.

Stepping back in time

This past weekend, temperatures reached over 90 degrees - that means summer, right?! I don't know about you but I was craving a dip in the pool all weekend... I loved the hot weather and it made me realize that we're heading right into summer and not looking back.

I was able to step back in time at the 19th Century Rendezvous at Lincoln Pioneer Village & Museum (my job is so fun!) and had a great time!

Not only was the Village full of demonstrations that included candle making, spinning, open hearth cooking, and other Lincoln-era activities but I actually saw live sheep and hawk/knife throwing! I was given a chance to throw a knife at the target but decided it was safer for everyone if I simply observed instead. I captured a little bit on film and wanted to share some of what the Lincoln Pioneer Village & Museum has to offer you!

Sneak Peak of THE BEEST!

I got to see the world from the top today... that's right, I was on top of the Wildebeest at Holiday World & Splashin' Safari this afternoon! I felt like VIP as I peaked at THE BEST "behind the scenes" with PR Director, Paula Werne.

It was very interesting to see THE BEEST up close and learn a little about how it works. I was able to take a little video (and I'm new at video so please bear with me) but check it out to see the view I got from THE BEEST today!

Wildebeest Sneak Peak

Holiday World opens TOMORROW - Saturday, May 1! The Wildebeest will be introduced when Splashin' Safari opens on May 14 (in just a couple weeks!) I can't wait to attempt to "tame the best" myself shortly!

Yes - we're there! Summer 2010 is right around the corner and I'm as excited as can be for my first summer at the Visitors Bureau... I started in the fall of last year and have been hearing about great summers in Spencer County over and over, and now all of the activity is finally about to begin!

Holiday World & Splashin Safari opens for weekends in just a few days, May 1, 2010. Shortly after, on May 14, 2010, the theme park will open daily for the summer, featuring the World's Longest Water Coaster, Wildebeest! I can't wait to get a tan during my visits to Holiday World. :)

Santa's Candy Castle and Lincoln Pioneer Village also open on Saturday, May 1, 2010. These two attractions are each celebrating 75 years this year... wow, that's a long time!

The Holiday Drive-In, one of my childhood favorites, is already open for weekends and will soon be open nightly. And of course, I love going to the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial and Lincoln State Park this time of the year - it's great to walk the trails and see spring take over without any pesky bugs or sticky humidity.

...there's just too much going on for one blog post right now! I plan to visit attractions in the area and report back to "show & tell" my experiences.

Spring is in the air...finally!

On a day like today, when it's in the 60's, bright and beautifully sunny, how can you not think about spring? I'm certainly ready to dust off the short-sleeves and put away the winter coats and sweaters, that's for sure!

I like to think about fun things to do and places to visit when the weather gets nice like this and I'm so fortunate to be in the position I'm in - I get to help others find fun things to do and legendary places to visit with their families all summer long. Soon, the roads will be full of families heading to Holiday World & Splashin' Safari or checking in at Lake Rudolph Campground & RV Resort, not to mention hiking the trails through Lincoln State Park and Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial! There's just so much to do here!

I think that March marks the beginning of “thinking spring”!

I’m ready for warm weather, beautiful blooms, green grass and so much more! The Spencer County Visitors Bureau is thinking spring so much that we’re almost ready for the summertime. Not really, but we’re definitely ready for the warm weather and all the fun that it brings to the area. I’ve posted a few pictures to help you think of happy thoughts and spring time before the temperatures rise even more…

With an area fortunate enough to be the home of Lincoln’s boyhood, which includes a National park AND a State Park, plus the Lincoln Amphitheatre. We’re also the home of Santa Claus, Indiana, where we get to celebrate Christmas all year long, and not to mention the world's first theme park in the United States - Holiday World & Splashin' Safari.

Season Greetings from America's Christmas Hometown: Santa Claus, Indiana!

I must say... the charming town of Santa Claus, Indiana, is buzzing with excitement this week as everyone prepares for the newly expanded 5-weekend Santa Claus Christmas Celebration. If you haven't heard, the Celebration starts THIS Friday, November 20, and continues every Friday, Saturday & Sunday until December, 20 - the weekend before Christmas Day!

We get to celebrate Christmas for an entire month this year :)

I want to personally invite you ALL to the Traditional Pre-Christmas Dinner THIS Friday at 6:30pm at Santa's Lodge. The Dinner will provide a scrumptious family meal followed by carols with Santa Claus himself and then the first official Tree Lighting Ceremony that will declare the national start of the Christmas season!! Check out all of the events every weekend including the Santa Claus Land of Lights, Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire, 4 different contests such as FRUITCAKE EATING and GINGERBREAD HOUSE BUILDING!

Hello from Melissa 2.0

I'm finally on the blog! I want to introduce myself - I'm Melissa Wilkinson, or commonly referred to as Melissa 2.0, and am the new Director for the Spencer County Visitors Bureau. Melissa Miller, or Melissa 1.0, left Southern Indiana to move closer to her family in Missouri and took a job with the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri!

I'm originally from this area; I went to Heritage Hills High School, worked at Holiday Foods in Rockport and Splashin' Safari in Santa Claus and then attended Indiana University (GO HOOSIERS!) After moving to South Florida on a whim right after college, I have officially returned to Spencer County, working to promote the county as the fun and affordable destination it is, and am loving it!

In Florida, I worked for a professional regional theatre, the Maltz Jupiter Theatre, and had a great experience with marketing and public relations in the world of performing arts. I can't say that I don't miss the palm trees, sandy beaches and sticky humidity... BUT I cannot even begin to express how much I am enjoying the fall season here! I really missed the seasons and especially the changing of the leaves... I may change my mind by winter time when the temperature drops below freezing and my toes are numb, but I'm definitely glad to be back!

Abraham Lincoln Represented at the Indiana State Fair

Last Thursday, representatives from the Spencer County Visitors Bureau and the Lincoln Pioneer Village traveled to the Indiana State Fair's Heritage Day to spread the word about Abraham Lincoln's life in Indiana. The crew went on behalf of the Indiana Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission to provide hundreds of people with information about Abraham Lincoln and the many opportunities to learn about him in Spencer County.

"The Indiana State Fair was the perfect opportunity to put our information in the hands of people from all over. The Heritage Day brought us people interested in Lincoln's boyhood years in Indiana, as well as people who didn't even realize Lincoln lived here for 14 years," said Crystal Buehler of the Spencer County Visitors Bureau, "we were really able to reach a wide variety of people."

August 3 - September 6, 2009

August 3: St. Meinrad Community Lincoln Heritage Day and Concert
The Spencer County town of St. Meinrad plays host to a full day of events. Come to the Community Center, located at 13150 E. CR 1950 N, and visit a Farmer’s Market, a primitive farm tool display, crocheting and quilting demonstrations, horse and wagon rides, yarn and corn husk doll-making demos, Lincoln Era exhibits and other vendors and booths designed to create a spirit of “old fashioned fellowship” the way the Lincolns and their contemporaries might have enjoyed. The fun moves to the beautiful Saint Meinrad Archabbey campus (200 Hill Drive) for an outdoor bluegrass concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. Parking is available all day at the Community Center and at the Archabbey after 3:30 p.m. This event is free to the public. Lincoln Heritage Day and Concert is sponsored by SMART (St. Meinrad Area Revitalization Team) and the Saint Meinrad Archabbey.

August 5: Lincoln Jubilee Opening Ceremony
The Lincoln Bicentennial Jubilee formally kicks off Wednesday at Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial located on SR 162 in Lincoln City. The 6:30 p.m. event, free to the public, will feature music by the Celebration Singers and a variety of welcoming remarks and acknowledgments from Committee Chair, Kay Bertl and Memorial Director, Mike Capps. Also featured will be Cub Scout Pack 102 for a presentation of colors and Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari’s Pat Koch as guest speaker. In case of inclement weather the ceremony will be held at nearby Heritage Hills High School.

August 6: Little Abe and Sarah Pageant
On Thursday evening, the Jubilee moves to AEP Honey Creek Farm located off New US 231 at 1745 E CR 500 N. Children ages 6-9 and 10-12 are invited to dress up as Abraham and his sister, Sarah to put a pioneer spin on a traditional pageant. Mary Todd Lincolns are welcome as well! Contestants can bring props onto the stage as they are judged for attire and stage presence. This event is free to the public, however, a $5 per car parking fee applies. August 7-9: Lincoln Country Sights and Sounds and Best of Bluegrass Bash
AEP Honey Creek Farm continues the jubilee with Lincoln Country Sights and Sounds. A series of vendors, displays, arts and crafts, quilt show and a military encampment will immerse spectators in Lincoln Lore. Food vendors will provide a wide variety of selections to choose from.

For the first time, Spencer County will serve as host for a competitive bluegrass contest on Friday, August 7. The Best of Bluegrass Bash competition kicks off at 7 p.m. as beginner banjo and mandolin players compete for prizes. Afterwards, bluegrass bands will compete for the top six spots in the finals scheduled for the following night. Saturday’s competition begins at 10 a.m., featuring individual banjo, mandolin and fiddler contests in four divisions; pee-wees under 10, beginners ages11-19 years old, adults ages 20-55 and seniors 56 and older before wrapping up with the bluegrass band finals. First, second and third place finishes will each receive a portion of the $3,000 prize money.
There is no entry fee, however, a $5 parking fee will be assessed per car per day. No coolers or alcoholic beverages will be allowed on the premises. Camping will be available and attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for comfortable seating while enjoying the bluegrass music.

August 8: “Taste of Mary Todd Lincoln”
For those in the mood for sight-seeing and period flavor, Rockport provides a unique opportunity with a series of events collectively referred to as “Taste of Mary Todd Lincoln.” Beginning at 11:30 a.m.,The Rockport Inn, located at 130 S Third Street, will host a period luncheon. Dine in the historic building and move across the street to the Spencer County Courthouse to witness a period style fashion show at 1 p.m. featuring costuming of antebellum America. The taste continues directly afterwards with a bus home tour of select Spencer County residences. Admission for these three events is just $50. Due to limited tickets, reservations for the “Taste of Mary Todd Lincoln” are required. Call 812-649-2186 to reserve your spot.

August 9: Spiritual Camp Meeting and Other Activities
The Jubilee winds down on Sunday with a nondenominational Spiritual Camp meeting at AEP Honey Creek Farm at 10 a.m. Everyone, regardless of faith, is welcome to join in the community service, much in the way people did during the Lincoln era.The parking fee is waived on Sunday. Afterwards, the stage will be open for performers to entertain the crowd. The Sights and Sounds vendors and displays will remain until 4 p.m.

September 6: Evansville Philharmonic at Lincoln Amphitheatre
On Sunday, September 6, at 7:30 p.m. the Evansville Philharmonic caps off the two-year celebration with a patriotic performance in Indiana’s recently restored covered outdoor stage, the Lincoln Amphitheatre, located within Lincoln State Park on SR 162. The evening will consist of several patriotic selections including Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture and Aaron Copland’s “A Lincoln Portrait” featuring 8th District US Congressman Brad Ellsworth as the Narrator and Dean Dorrell as President Lincoln. WFIE 14’s Jeff Lyons will emcee the event. Tickets are on sale now and may be purchased at the Philharmonic box office at 812-425-5050.

New Attraction Under Construction in Santa Claus, Ind.

A new attraction in Santa Claus, Ind. is under construction and is scheduled for an August opening. The Santa Claus Christmas Store will be located in the Kringle Place Shopping Center. Owned and operated by Philip Koch and his Santa Claus based company HO HO HOldings, LLC, the store features over 6,500 sq. ft. of retail space including gifts, indoor and outdoor Christmas lights, wreaths, tree trimmings, nativities, Christmas yard art, home decor and collectibles. Commercial decorations and lighting will also be offered along with an online store currently under development. Within the store is a magical place called Santa's House. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year, children can visit with and have their photos taken with Santa. In 2010, Santa will be available May through December. Candy, fudge, cookies and other items will also be sold in the store.

"We're creating a magical place that families can experience year-round," said Koch. "This will be the largest Christmas store of its kind in the region, similar to attractions found in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee or Frankenmuth, Michigan. For now, it won't be as big as those attractions, but we have plans to expand in the future. We have lots of tourists during the summer. Our goal is to attract people from all over the world to Santa Claus, Indiana, no matter the season." The Santa Claus Christmas Store will occupy the combined spaces of 3 former tenants in the shopping center, including World Class Travel which continues to operate out of the home of Julie Korn. Korn has also been hired as the manager of the new Christmas Store. Other plans include a huge Santa in lights peaking over the roof of Kringle Place and a giant LED Christmas tree in the parking lot. HO HO HOldings, LLC also owns and operates Lake Rudolph Campground & RV Resort and Kringle Place Shopping Center.

Abraham Lincoln is on our minds--and in our food--here in Spencer County! After lunch at the Chateau today, Crystal, our office manager and Laura, the communications director from the Lincoln Amphitheatre, shared a bowl of dirt pudding for dessert. Munching came to a halt when Laura spotted our 16th president and yelled, "Stop eating! Lincoln is in our dirt pudding!" Sure enough, there he was, top hat and all!

Steamy Day for Shooting B-roll at Lincoln State Park!

Yesterday was a hot one in Spencer County! Crystal, our office manager, and Amanda, our summer intern, accompanied a videographer around the county to capture footage of our beautiful area. On the left are some shots of the beach and picnic area at Lincoln State Park where the girls spent a few hours with the videographer. Don't let the lighting fool you, although it was cloudy the humidity made for a smotheringly hot day at the park! In the center picture you can see lots of sweaty campers taking advantage of the cool lake!

Crystal and Amanda were in for a surprise on the far end of the beach. Although they were originally supposed to just be along for the ride, the girls had to play a role in the video footage. Since there were no paddle boaters on the lake, Crystal and Amanda stepped in, suited up in life jackets and paddled around the lake for the camera!

Footage was also captured of Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial, Lincoln Amphitheatre and various sites around both of the parks.

Fireworks Shows in Spencer County

Spencer County offers two prime spots to view fireworks this weekend:

Jenkins #254 American Legion
On Saturday, July 4th, the American Legion Post #254 in Rockport, Ind. will begin a fireworks show at dusk (approximately 9 p.m.).

Holiday World & Splashin' Safari
A 15-minute firework display will begin shortly after Holiday World closes at 9:30 p.m. CDT on the 4th of July. Although the show will be visible throughout the park, the best place to view fireworks will be from the Thanksgiving section.

Last Wednesday, June 24, our summer intern Amanda served as a step-on tour guide for a bus full of seniors from Michigan. Above is a collage she made for the group as a memento after a fun-filled day in Spencer County. Amanda led them to Dr. Ted's Musical Marvels for a nostalgic musical trip back in time, Windell's Cafe' for some delicious home cookin', Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial to learn about Lincoln's 14 years in Spencer County, Buffalo Run to feed buffalo and take part in an exciting presentation by Kathleen Crews, to the St. Meinrad Archabbey for a unique lodging experience and to the new dinner and show LINCOLN at the Lincoln Amphitheatre. On Thursday, June 25, Amanda and Crystal, our office manager, met the group for breakfast at the St. Meinrad Archabbey and led them to one last stop; the Santa Claus Museum.

"It was a great experience!" Amanda said, "definitely my favorite day of work here so far! Everyone was so nice and I couldn't have asked for a better group to lead on my first tour!"

Well-known Author and Motivational Speaker to Visit Spencer County for End-of-Summer Blowout!

Rockport Lincoln Pioneer Village Hosts Rendezvous

Rockport Lincoln Pioneer Village hosted hundreds this weekend during it's first Rendezvous event! The park was packed with demonstrations on everything from muzzle loading to blacksmithing and weaving to sheep sheering.

A Civil War Encampment was set up along the outside of the village gates while inside each of the replica cabins from the Lincoln era featured different pioneer themes.

The South Spencer Rebel Singers along with village volunteers performed excerpts from Billy Ed Wheeler's Young Abe Lincoln.

Over 3,000 Attend Indiana Penny Unveiling at Lincoln Amphitheatre

Despite the rain a huge crowd of coin collectors and Lincolnfiles turned out today at the release of the U.S. Mint's new Indiana Penny. The one cent coin is the second in a series of four new pennies to be issued this year.

The event included more than 200 school children, the director of the U.S. Mint Edmond Moy, and The Celebration Singers.

More than 20,000 rolls of pennies were exchanged during the event in just a few hours time.

Last week, just before Holiday World opened for the season, I got a chance to take a ride on the world's new tallest water ride: Pilgrims Plunge. I am second from the back on the left side in the photo above. The one screaming her head off!

This ride is a great combination of a roller coaster, a water slide and a monsoon! I definitely suggest riding it in a swimsuit! You can actually access Pilgrims Plunge from Holiday World's "dry park" or the Splashin' Safari Water Park.

Lake Rudolph Office Comes Down

The office of Lake Rudolph Campground & RV Resort, which was severely damaged in a fire just after Christmas, was completely demolished on Monday to make room for a brand new office structure. The staff is currently working out of a temporary office trailer and fortunately the fire did not damage any of the campground area.

Here's another view of the demolition of the building, which was the Koch family residence before being converted to the Lake Rudolph office. For the sake of nostalgia, the stones from the home's fire place were salvaged and will be used in a fireplace in the new office building. Check back on the blog for new construction updates!

Lincoln Funeral Tribute Event April 14

A detailed replica of Abraham Lincoln's casket will be on display Tuesday, April 14, at the Spencer County, Ind. Courthouse in Rockport, 144 years to the day after our 16th president's assassination.

This is the latest in a series of special events to commemorate 2009 at the bicentennial anniversary of Lincoln's birth in his boyhood home of Spencer County, Ind., where he lived from age 7 to 21.

Several community organizations will take part in a wreath laying ceremony to start off the Lincoln Funeral Tribute on April 14 at noon, CDT. At 6 p.m. a short film entitled Faces of Lincoln will be shown in the courthouse auditorium.

The replica casket will remain on exhibit for the public to view until midnight. As Lincoln's body traveled via train from Washington, D.C. to Springfield, Ill., for burial it was displayed at many places into the early morning hours to accommodate the huge numbers of mourners who lined up to pay tribute to their president. Authentic down to the smallest details, this replica is circulated around the United States by the Batesville Casket Company of Indiana. President Lincoln's casket was the most elaborate of its time, constructed of solid walnut and completely covered in expensive black cloth. It was 6 feet, 6 inches long and was decorated with sterling silver handles and sterling silver studs extending the entire length of its sides.

People are urged to come to this event dressed in 1800's period clothing, although it is not required. Groups of individuals wishing to provide a wreath for the ceremony should call 812-489-0365.

Holiday World Begins Feeding Families Food Drive

This summer if you bring a canned food donation to Holiday World & Splashin' Safari to help a needy family, in return they'll help feed your own family.

During the months of May and June every ticket holder who donates at least two cans of food will receive $5 in Holibucks to spend in the park that day. You can use the Holibucks to at any of the park's restaurants, food booths, gift shops or game booths.

The goal of the Feeding families Food Drive is to collect 200,000 cans! They will go to four different food pantries in Indianapolis, Evansville, Louisville and Nashville. Items needed include shelf stable meals, peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables, canned tuna or chicken.

Lincoln Boyhood Welcomes New Additions

The Living Historical Farm at Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial welcomed two baby lambs into the world this morning! I couldn't wait to get over there to snap some photos of these adorable fuzzy little things!

This spring a total of 3 lambs have been born at Lincoln Boyhood and a baby calf is due any day now.

All this spring's new additions can be seen by the public when the Living Historical Farm opens for the season on Sunday, April 12.

Ahhh, a mother's love! This mama was pretty protective of her little one and didn't much like me climbing around in the pen trying to get the best camera angle.

Although this mama sheep is black and brown, her little lamb is as white as snow!

This little lamb is trying out his wobbly new legs! I think he'll get the hang of it soon enough.

Flatboat Trip Motors up for Auction on eBay

Two 150-horse-power Mercury Verado outboard engines used on the Lincoln's Journey of Remembrance Flatboat Trip are now up for auction on eBay to benefit future Lincoln projects in Spencer County, Ind.

A reserve amount of $12,000 has been set for the pair of motors, used to take a 60-foot pioneer era replica flatboat from Rockport, Ind., to New Orleans, La. last fall. Proceeds will go to Think Lincoln, Inc.

New Mural at Lincoln Amphitheatre

Judy Powers of Mt. Vernon, Ind., is working on a Civil War Battlefield mural as part of a new interpretive center at Lincoln Amphitheatre. Since Mt. Vernon is about an hour and a half from us here in Spencer County, Judy has been staying with me this week at my house. It's been a treat!

Taking a spring drive.....

One of the things I love most about Spencer County is its hilly, curvy, winding country roads. Especially this time of year when you see bunches of daffodils growing wild along the sides of the highways and bright white blooms of pear trees all around.

I'd suggest a trip down the Ohio River Scenic Byway along Highway 66 in Southern Spencer County.

Lincoln Bicentennial Plaza is Taking Shape

Work on a new tribute to Abraham Lincoln's Spencer County, Indiana, youth is well underway at Lincoln State Park. Lincoln Bicentennial Plaza will open to the public on June 12, the same day as the premiere of LINCOLN, a new theatrical experience at Lincoln Amphitheatre.

The plaza, which is funded by the Indiana Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, features a circle, divided into many sections. Where you see the squares above, a limestone pedestal will be located featuring an interpretive sign signifying key milestones in Lincoln's formative Indiana years, from ages 7 to 21.

The back half of the plaza, shown here, will feature a twice life size bronze bust atop a pedestal set up in the center. The bust is being created by Will Clark a sculptor from Ft. Wayne, Ind.

Here is an overview of the plaza from the front....it will be so pretty when all the trees behind it have green leaves on them! You could almost envision a young Abe skipping through those same woods!

How much would you pay for a penny??

The U.S. Mint released the first in a series of 4 new pennies on Lincoln's 200th Birthday, Feb. 12. I've been watching my change like a hawk to see if I could spot one, but after nearly a month still haven't seen one.

After chatting with some fellow Lincoln enthusiasts at the Indiana Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission meeting last week, I found out none of them have seen them either.

Several coin collector websites say that these new pennies will in fact be quite rare and may not ever make it into the general coin circulation. In part because of the current economic state, people are spending less money, so less money is being released by the Mint. It seems people are digging through their couch cushions turning in more change than banks need right now.

We all know there is one place to find anything you're looking for...EBAY!

After a brief bidding war, I paid $20 for a 50 cent roll of pennies. Talk about inflation!

Spencer County will be the site for the release of the second penny in this series. A special event will be held May 14 in Lincoln City. Details are still being worked out, so stay tuned!

Signs of Spring...

For some people, they know spring is coming when they see the tulips coming up or the buds on the trees. For us here in Spencer County, a sure sign of spring is seeing construction at Holiday World & Splashin' Safari.

This will be the splash pool at the bottom of Pilgram's Plunge, the World's Tallest Water Ride!

The first vertical steel piece of Pilgrim's Plunge! When the ride is complete it will be 165 feet tall.

You might think it is insulting, but we don't mind being called wacky! We'll take that as a compliment! Thanks Oprah! I mean, we have to admit it is a little wacky celebrating Christmas all year long, having a Santa Claus statue outside your office and a Christmas Tree on your desk!

It's also a little wacky that a Holiday World would offer free unlimited softdrinks, free sunscreen, free inner tubes and free parking. But what can we say, we're just a little wacky here in Santa Claus, Ind.! And wacky in this case, saves you money!! There's nothing wacky about saving money! That's just smart!

The National Park Foundation recently launched a new fund drive to help preserve the six sites associated with Abraham Lincoln's life and legacy, including Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial, here in Spencer County.

The goal of the campaign is to encourage people of all ages to donate Lincoln-head pennies, five dollar bills, or make larger donations online. They hope to raise $200,000, which is $1,000 for every year since Lincoln's birth.

Obama to Dine like Lincoln

All eyes will be on the inauguration of Barack Obama on Tuesday and the day is said to be filled with Abraham Lincoln tributes from top hat to bottom. 2009 is after all, Lincoln's much anticipated bicentennial so it is fitting that the inauguration's theme is "A New Birth of Freedom."

Obama will be sworn in using the same bible as Lincoln and the post-inauguration lunch includes culinary traditions from the Lincoln-era served on Mary Todd Lincoln's own china. They're even cooking up wild game just like Abe would have eaten as a boy growing up here on the frontier in Spencer County, Ind. The menu is said to include duck breast with cherry chutney, molasses whipped sweet potatoes, and cinnamon apple sponge cake.

New Exhibit at Santa Claus Museum

Just before Christmas a new exhibit opened at The Santa Claus Museum, featuring a recreation of Jim Yellig, who was Santa at Santa Claus Land for many many years and is the father of Museum Founder and Holiday World icon Pat Koch.

The exhibit was created by The Weber Group of Sellersburg, Ind. They recently posted a wonderful blog on their site about this project including photos of brothers Tom and Donny Weber's own visits to Santa Claus Land back in the 1950s.

Sisters Serve as Elves

The Santa's Elves, Inc., organization has all its volunteers working feverishly to help Santa send out letters to children from all over the world who have mailed their letters to Santa Claus, Ind. The Elves nerve center is The Santa Claus Museum, which right now has an entire room littered with letters and envelopes and stamps, not to mention a lot of "Elves" with writers cramp. This year Santa Claus, Ind. has received more than twice as many letters to Santa as last year creating a major Elf shortage!! All sorts of groups and organizations have been pitching in.

Recently, the Sisters of St. Benedict have chipped in to help! Sister Agnes Marie writes about it on her blog, Discover God in the Every Day. With Us.

It just goes to show that Santa's Elves aren't just at the North Pole!!

Rockport Christmas Parade

Despite the chilly temperatures, a huge crowd gathered to watch the annual Rockport Christmas Parade today. The parade was part of the town's annual Christmas Festival which included a breakfast with Santa, craft show in the Spencer County Courthouse Rotunda, and special activities at Lincoln Pioneer Village. This year's grand marshal was Abraham Lincoln, in honor of his upcoming 200th Birthday. Many of the floats also had a Lincoln Bicentennial theme.

I love seeing all the people walking into the Santa Claus Post Office this time of year with stacks of holiday cards in hand! Folks drive from all over to come to the Santa Claus, Ind. post office for our special picture postmark.

Today I came across a a post on the Highlowaha Blog mentioning a woman in Sellersburg, Ind., who volunteered to take a road trip to Santa Claus and postmark all her friend's Christmas cards. Now she's definately got the spirit of the season!

For others interested in getting the world-famous Santa Claus Postmark on their cards, our postmaster Marian Balbach offers these tips and suggestions:

1) Allow at least a 2-inch by 4-inch space in the stamp area for the picture postmark;

2) Have postage applied to the cards before bringing or mailing them to the post office;

3) If you wish to mail Christmas cards to the post office, package them - with postage stamps already on them - in a sturdy envelope or box and mail to:

This morning I walked into the local gas station to grab a coke on my way to the office and bumped into Santa Claus in Santa Claus, Ind.

You know, not just anyone, who lives anywhere, could say that!

There he was with his flowing white beard and the morning paper! He must have given the reindeer the day off, I thought, as I saw him climb into a gold mini van in the parking lot. I couldn't help but smile and wave at him. I mean, I want to stay on "The Good List!"

I just had the laugh at the insanity of it all.

Living in a town named Santa Claus in the month of December can be pretty hectic! Especially when its my job to promote all our holiday festivities! Luckily, some folks are starting to take notice of all the festiveness our little town holds.

Today, a story about Santa Claus appeared in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. And for those of you who missed the premier of The Travel Channel's Most Christmassy Places in America, it will re-air Thursday, Dec. 4, at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Central Time. Evansville's Fox 7 News included an announcement about the town's Christmas Picture Postmark on its website today as well.

Lake Rudolph Named RV Park of the Year, Again!

The National Association of RV Parks & Campgrounds (ARVC) awarded Lake Rudolph Campground & RV Resort in Santa Claus, Indiana the 2008-2009 National RV Park of the Year in the large park category (251-499 sites). The Awards of Excellence program was part of the ARVC national convention held Nov. 15, 2008 in Nashville, Tenn.

This is actually the second time Lake Rudolph has received this honor. The park also was recognized as 2004-2005 National RV Park of the Year. Playwright, Artistic Director Selected by Lincoln Amphitheatre

An accomplished playwright whose work has been featured Off-Broadway and in theatres throughout the country is the top choice to pen "Lincoln," Indiana's new theatrical tribute to Abraham Lincoln.

An award-winning playwright and screenwriter, Ken Jones is currently playwright-in-residence and the Chairman of the Department of Theatre and Dance at Northern Kentucky University. Jones received his B.F.A. in Theatre Arts from the University of Florida and a M.F.A. in playwriting from the University of Virginia. He then continued on to graduate in playwriting from the American Repertory Theatre's Institute for Advanced Theatre Training at Harvard University.

A theatre professor at the University of Evansville, Scott Lank was selected as Artistic Director for "Lincoln." Lank is a 21-year veteran of the university's celebrated theatre department. He has a BFA from the University of Evansville and a MFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Lank is a member of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers and the National Congress of Actors and Acting Teachers.

The world premiere of "Lincoln" will take place in June on the very grounds where Abraham Lincoln grew up. Enhanced by multimedia projections and period music, the story of the man considered by many to be the greatest U.S. president is expected to be a highpoint of the national celebration of the bicentennial of Lincoln's birth. Through Jones' play, audience members of all ages will gain an insight into the life of the man whose legacy continues to forge the future.

Wishful Thinking...

This week the town of Santa Claus, Ind., has a very special visitor. Aidan Bailey, age 4, of Iowa, is here with his family on a trip sponsored by the Make a Wish Foundation. Aidan is awaiting a double lung transplant and requires oxygen at all times, but don't think that slows him down! He is full of energy and has a natural curoisty about everything! He spent a day at Holiday World & Splashin' Safari and is camping at Lake Rudolph Campground & RV Resort. He'll also visit The Santa Claus Museum and Santa's Candy Castle while he's here.

When he came to visit us at the Spencer County Visitors Bureau office, he just had to try on a Santa Hat we had on display. This is the first Make a Wish trip our office has been involved with and I just can't describe the great feeling you get inside knowing you're helping make a child's dreams come true.

We wish Aidan all the best!

Improvements at Lincoln Pioneer Village

The Leadership Spencer County Class of 2008 made it their class project to build a stockade fence around Lincoln Pioneer Village in Rockport.

The fence helps insulate the Pioneer Village from the modern city sounds of the nearby public pool. It also helps to preserve the historical integrity of this memorial to the life of Abraham Lincoln in Spencer County.

Funding for the project was provided by the Spencer County Community Foundation, which selected Leadership Spencer County Class as the receipents of a $934 grant.

New Book About Lincoln in Spencer County

Evansville Historian William E. Bartelt just released a new biography of Lincoln's years in Indiana. For anyone who has enjoyed visiting our Spencer County Lincoln sites, I know it will be a great read!

The book is available through the Indaina Historical Society Press and you can read more about Bartelt's book on their blog.

Bartelt has been a wonderful friend to Spencer County, working for many summers at Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial and more recently, serving on the Lincoln Boyhood Drama Association Board. We wish him great success with this new project!

Lincoln Bicentennial Plaza Groundbreaking

The Indiana Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission visited Spencer County's Lincoln State Park last week to break ground for the new Lincoln Bicentennial Plaza.

The project was designed by Artist Will Clark and Architect George Morrison both of Ft. Wayne, Ind. It consists of a large, bisected circular plaza. Visitors will first enter an area punctuated with limestone pedestals and interpretive signs signifying key milestones in Lincoln’s formative Indiana years between ages seven and 21.

A central half-circle reminds visitors of young Abraham’s growth from a boy to a man. Visitors can move freely between the pedestals at any pace. The second semicircle provides a more intimate space for reflecting upon the man who led this nation. It will contain a twice-life-size bronze bust of Lincoln, accompanied by some of his quotes.

The site is located on a knoll in the Oak Grove area of the park. The project is scheduled for completion in June of 2009. This is also the same time Lincoln Amphitheatre will re-open.

The estimated cost of the project is $300,000, which will be funded through the Indiana Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission.

Spencer County Tourism Ranks 7th in State

Thanks to wonderful visitors like all of you who read this blog, Spencer County ranks 7th in tourism spending per capita.

This week we revealed the results of a year-long study measuring the impact of the tourism industry on Spencer County's economy.

Visitors to Spencer County had a sales impact of $161.7 million and were responsible for more than 3,300 jobs during 2007, according to the study conducted by the University of Southern Indiana.

Here are some fun facts about Spencer County Visitors:

40 percent of visitors are under age 17. People age 25 to 44 make up 31 percent of visitors to Spencer County.

48 percent of visitors reside within Indiana. Large percentages also come from Kentucky, Illinois and Tennessee.

49 percent of visitors stayed over night

Visitors spent an average of $237 on lodging during their trip

Visitors spending per person amounted to: $22 on food, $51 on activities, $10 on souvenirs and $41 per trip on gasoline.

84 percent of visitors were very likely to come back and 45 percent of those surveyed had been to Spencer County 2 to 5 times.

This week we welcomed two reporters to Santa Claus, Ind., from The Chicago Tribune. They were working on a story about what it is like to live in a town where it is Christmas every day of the year! They plan to run the story in The Tribune's Tempo section on June 25, which will be exactly 6 months away from Christmas Day.

We showed them a jolly time and were sure to let our Holiday Spirit shine through, even though it is only June! They visited Holiday World & Splashin' Safari, The Santa Claus Museum, Santa's Candy Castle, and The Santa Claus Post Office. We rounded out the evening with a boat ride on Christmas Lake, located in the gated community of Christmas Lake Village.

I think they were surprised by just how much there was to see and do in our festive little town!

Goodbye to an old friend...

Macon Ray, 81, who portrayed Abraham Lincoln across Southern Indiana for many years, died yesterday from a brain tumor.

He played the role of President Lincoln in Billy Ed Wheeler's "Young Abe Lincoln," which was performed at Lincoln Amphitheatre in Lincoln State Park for many years.

Ray's image as Lincoln has been used for many years by the Spencer County Visitors Bureau on billboards, in brochures, in print ads and on our website.

Delta Queen Visits Grandview

The Delta Queen docked in Grandview, Ind., on Thursday, May 29, bringing with it several hundred passengers. This was the Delta Queen's second stop in Grandview this year.

This may be the last year this historic steamboat travels down river. The boat's long-standing coast guard exemption from fire safety rules is scheduled to expire later this year. A lobbying effort to 'Save the Queen' is ongoing.

Seeing one of these historic boats out on the river, transports you back to another time. If you'd like to come view one of these beautiful steamboats in person, mark your calendar for August 28, October 18 and October 25 when the American Queen will visit Grandview.

With many graduation ceremonies going on this weekend, I thought I'd share with you the work of a group of students from the University of Evansville.

These four students performed a dramatic reading titled "To Touch the Earth" during the Lincoln Bicentennial Mother's Day Celebration held May 11 at Lincoln Amphitheatre. The work was written by University of Evansville Theatre Professor R. Scott Lank specifically for this event.

Here's a fun little fact, 152 years ago today, May 21, 1856, the Santa Claus, Ind. post office was officially recognized by the U.S. Government.

Since that time, this tiny town's post office has received millions of letters from children all over the world! A group of volunteers, know as Santa's Elves, help answer childrens letters.

Each year, the post office offers a special picture postmark for holiday cards throughout the Christmas season.

If you're visiting the Santa Claus, Ind., post office this summer, be sure to stop and have your picture made by with the Santa statue out front!

In celebration of the role women played in Abraham Lincoln's life, mothers attending a May 11 event marking the 200th anniversary of his birth will receive free tulip trees. Families are being encouraged to plant the trees as a lasting tribute to Lincoln’s bicentennial and his Indiana heritage.

On Mother's Day – May 11, 2008 – the state where Lincoln spent his formative years will host one of only five national signature events created by the National Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Celebration. Pioneer Day is a Hit!

While The Village People certianly had a few hits in the 70's, there is a new group of village people producing hits these days! I'm referring to the Friends of Lincoln Pioneer Village, whose Pioneer Days event Saturday was definately a hit with the crowd. There were lots of opportunities to take part in hands on demonstrations of frontier life skills. From candle making to sheering sheep there were activities for all ages to enjoy! About 100 people attended the event, where a carving of Abraham Lincoln was unveiled as well.

This lifesize chainsaw carving of Abraham Lincoln was unveiled Saturday at Lincoln State Park. The Friends of Lincoln State Park group commissioned the work by local chainsaw artist Willy Loper of Grandview. From left are LSP Friends President Dan Wilkinson, and LSP Friends members Shirley Begle, Bonnie Hohl, and Linda Wilkinson. The statue, which commemorates the upcoming Lincoln Bicentennial, is made from a sycamore log. It features a young Lincoln holding an ax in one hand and a law book in the other.

Sunday, May 11, bring your children to Abraham Lincoln's Boyhood Home in Spencer County and share with them the story of how a pioneer boy named Abraham Lincoln grew into America's Greatest President.

Lincoln often credited his mother, Nancy Hanks, and stepmother, Sarah Bush Johnston, for helping shape his character and foster his love of learning. He once said, "All I am, or can be, I owe to my angel mother."

This special Mother's Day ceremony will honor the women who had an impact on Lincoln's life and today's mothers as well. It will include musical performances, a drama using Lincoln's own words about life on the Indiana frontier, and a wreath laying ceremony by area children. Gov. Mitch Daniels and Congressman Baron Hill also will speak.

After the ceremony, families can tour the Living Historical Farm at the site where Lincoln lived from age 7 to 21. With the help of the farm's interpreters, you can milk a cow, feed the sheep, or help with the garden.

Extreme Makeover for Huffman Mill Bridge

Indiana is well known for its covered bridges, but many people may not know there is a historic covered bridge right here in Spencer County.

The Huffman Mill covered bridge, located at the Spencer & Perry County line, was selected last week for a $240,000 restoration grant. The funding, announced by Congressman Baron Hill's office, is provided through the National Historic Covered Bridge Preservation Program of the Federal Highway Administration.

Spanning the Anderson River in Eastern Spencer County, the Huffman Mill bridge was built during the Civil War in 1864. According to local legend, Abraham Lincoln and his father took their grain to be ground into flour at Huffman Mill. However, the bridge wasn't built there until long after the Lincoln family left Indiana.

A current view of the bridge is shown at right, but we can't wait to see it all fixed up!

If you're interested in visiting this bridge, which is listed on the National Register of Historical Places, it's located off State Highway 545 on County Road 1300.

New Staff at Living Historical Farm

Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial's Living Historical Farm staff welcomed 4 new additions this week! Four little lambs join a group of just hatched baby chicks who will all be making their public debut when the Living Historical Farm opens for the season, April 13.

Two of the lambs, one black and one white, are twins! They were born Wednesday morning in a torrential downpour causing one of the worst floods in Spencer County in many years. Lead Park Ranger at the Living Historical Farm Bob Zimmerman trudged out to the pasture through the storm to carry the newborn lambs safely into the barn. The threesome are now doing terrific!

This baby lamb is sure to be popular with all the school groups who will tour Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial this spring.

This mother lamb looks after her little bundle of Spring-time Joy! With all these babies, this barn is looking more like a nursery.

Along with Abraham Lincoln's birthday on Tuesday, Feb. 12, came several inches of snow here at his boyhood home, in Spencer County, Ind.

As I hiked around photographing the Living Historical Farm at Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial I couldn't help but think about how hard the winters were for Lincoln and his pioneer family living on the Indiana frontier.
